Search Help

Although the VCOL Database and Search capabilities are of interest to the Educational Community at large, the purpose of the project was to address specific needs of Virginia educators in their effort to locate quality online (and offline) resources to use in their classrooms and to further their own educational objectives. To that end, advanced search capabilities specific to Virginia Standards of Learning have been built in, but remain optional. Additionally, content will feature regional resources where appropriate (conferences, training, procurement resources etc.).

Resources in the database are submitted by staff and by anonymous visitors to the site. Resources are then individually reviewed and cataloged by VCOL Staff and Volunteers familiar with the Virginia SOLs. Want to help?

All Searches:

Currently (2/2003), all searches will search the following Resource record fields:
    • URL:
    • Title: (short desc.)
    • Description: (abstract)
    • Keywords: (additional Keywords, not found in Title or Description fields)

Searches (input fields) are NOT case sensative.

Search Results are simply sorted alphabetically by Title and are not weighted.

Quick Search vs. Advanced Search:

2/2003 - Quick Search is limited to two keywords (or phrases) separated by And/Or/Not, and searches all 4 fields mentioned above.

2/2003 - Advanced Search provides a single keyword (or phrase) fields and adds Optional GradeLevel, SOL Category, and VCOL Category selection capabilities.

Less is More:

Keep in mind, the more search criteria you specify, the less results that will be returned. If you do not get enough results on your search, be more general, if you get too many results, be more specific.
